Effort Church in Palmyra, Virginia, and Effort Church in Liberia, Africa, discovered one another in 1997 and our great friendship began.

Over the years we have been sending annual gifts and supplies to our new brothers and sisters as Liberia and its infrastructure was completely ravaged by 14 years of civil war.

In 2003, Effort USA sent its first mission team to Liberia and has continued sending teams for six years now. We have joined Effort Church Liberia in rebuilding, repairing, and restoring what was destroyed by the war. We have become partners in Effort's ministry to orphans, new churches, camps for ex-combatants of the war, scholarships to send children to school, implementing youth conferences, children's retreats, and more.

"Legs for Liberia" is our next call to address some of the overwhelming medical needs in Liberia. The proceeds of the race will be used by medical missions team to construct medical clinics, provide medical supplies, resources and training for Liberia.

Thanks to the 2008 and 2009 Legs for Liberia participants and sponsors, the first medical missions team went to Liberia in November, 2009.  The team consisted of 20 people.  We held 3 days of clinics near Monrovia, plus an afternoon clinic at a girl’s hostel before traveling a long 15 hours on a very rough road to the country’s interior to hold another 4 days of clinic.  In total, we treated 2,400 people and filled more than 13,000 prescriptions.  We also did vision testing and provided glasses to hundreds of people.  People walked 18 or more miles just to get medical care.  The need is so great!  Please help us save more lives by walking or running with us to help and heal the people of Liberia.

Course:

The 5K runners will begin at The Village Park and will proceed down Main Street and turn right onto the Old Rail Trail. After completing the Old Rail Trail Loop, the course turns right onto Main Street once again, down to Route 15. After turning right onto Route 15, the new bridge over the Rivanna will lead to Route 53.

After turning right on Route 53, there will be an immediate right through the parking lot in front of Captain Frank's Seafood Restaurant, circling around to the back of Captain Frank's Seafood Restaurant and turning right in the field for a quick loop through the boat launch area. From the boat launch area, the course continues straight passing the back of Captain Frank's Seafood Restaurant and turns left onto Route 53. From Route 53, turn left onto Route 15 and back up to wind through historic Palmyra to finish at the Village Park.

Mile markers and timers will be at miles one and two, and there will be one water stop.

The 2-mile walkers will begin at the Village Park and will proceed down Main Street and turn right onto the Old Rail Trail. Once completing the Old Rail Trail Loop, the course winds through Historic Palmyra and back to the Village Park.
